Guyana’s history, and world history in general, has played a significant role in shaping its current societal makeup. The estimated population of Guyana as of December 2022 is approximately 806,000 people. The two largest ethnic groups in Guyana are East Indian and African, with both groups making up roughly equal portions of the population. Other ethnic communities in the country include Indigenous (Amerindians), Chinese, Portuguese, and people of mixed heritage, as well as smaller groups of Syrians, Lebanese, and Venezuelans.

The dominant religion in Guyana is Christianity, with the largest denominations being Roman Catholicism and various Protestant groups, including Anglicans and Baptists. A significant portion of the East Indian population practices Hinduism, while Islam is also practiced by a notable minority. There are smaller communities of Jehovah’s Witnesses and followers of other religions. A small percentage of the population, less than 3%, identify as non-religious or follow an unspecified belief.

The majority of Guyana’s population is between the ages of 25 and 54, with more males than females in this age group. According to official sources, the literacy rate in Guyana is above 95%. The country enjoys a relatively high life expectancy, with both males and females expected to live well into their seventies.
